Chassis History Tidbit

Did you know that the first automobiles were fashioned after horse coaches, the modish mode of transportation back then?

Since the internal combustion engine was discovered, paving the path for the entry of the automobile, engineers were too busy to work on apparently more important issues like steering, braking, and transmission systems. So they settled for the coaches as model for the automobile’s body and chassis. What turned out was a frame with body panels–everything made of wood–which successfully endured static and dynamic pressures. But then, there wasn’t really much need for strict weight and stability requirements anyway, since the engine wasn’t too powerful as what we have today.

OBAMANIA: Choice for the Chassis

So you ask, “Why the Topkick chassis for the prez limo?” Why not?

chassis

The chassis, as you very well know, is the most essential part of your car, as it supports the car’s body and motor. Made of light sheet metal or composite plastics. it’s the framework wherein most of the car’s mechanical components are attached, pretty much like the role of the human body’s skeletal system. So your engine, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, tires, axle assemblies, etc. greatly rely on the chassis. How your car body is molded also depends on the chassis’ structure.

You see, the chassis is where your baby derives strength and stability from to run smoothly regardless of the humps or the potholes on the road. Thus, it has to be powerfully built to carry the load of various car parts and to decrease noise or vibration levels throughout the journey.

So why Topkick was the top pick for the prez limo chassis? Aside from the looks, it certainly has bragging rights, too, when it comes to breadth and brawn. Weighing more than 10,000 pounds, the Topkick’s axles with leaf springs and air bladders can carry 5,000 pounds in the bed or tow 14,300 pounds. A beast indeed.
